Mr. Booth’s 40th anniversary.

Congratulations to Mr. Booth on his incredible achievement of reaching 40 years working in our school. The Ringsend community came out in force to honour Robin last night and a great time was had by all. The Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown, said Mass in our local church and afterwards we all went to the school hall for refreshments and presentations. Many of Robin’s old colleagues and past pupils came along which made the occasion very special. Declan Byrne made a moving speech on behalf of all of Robin’s past pupils. We hope Robin and his family (Mum Sheila, wife Una and daughter Laura) enjoyed the night. Here’s to many more years of teaching for Mr. Booth here in our school!

Learning code in Google.

Some lucky boys from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes spent two days in Google’s new European Headquarters on Barrow St. last week. The boys learned computer coding through working on projects using Scratch. Each group presented their finished games and stories at the end of the second day. The boys really enjoyed their time in Google where they learned a lot and had fun in a very cool environment. From the eleventh floor the boys had amazing panoramic views of their city. We were even able to spot our school. Maybe some of the boys will end up working at Google in the future?

Joe Duffy opens School Art Exhibition

Joe Duffy of RTÉ did a spectacular job of opening our school art exhibition. Joe was only in the school a few minutes when he seemed to know all our names. It was great to meet the man behind the voice on the radio and we discovered  that Joe also paints in his spare time.

All the boys had a picture on display. Local artists and parents like Louise Whelan displayed their work.  Mr.Booth our principal and Ms. Kelly Gibson the deputy principal of Ringsend College had pictures on show. Declan MacGabhann who taught us loads of interesting things about about fish a few weeks ago also had a painting in the exhibition.  No surprise that it was a painting of two sea-horses. A big ” Thank You” to our Parents’ Association for organising the event. A few days later a card arrived from Joe thanking us for inviting him to open our exhibition!

Hiking- Lough Dan, Glendalough and Maulin

Mr.Lane, Mr. Booth and the 5th and 6th have been doing some serious hiking since the weather finally improved this year. Lough Dan was our first hike and it was easy enough, then on Ms. Farrelly’s recommendation we did Glendalough. The scenery was spectacular.

Our next hike was Maulin but instead of starting at Crone Wood we began at Calary which is our usual starting point for Djouce.  3rd and 4th came with us as did Mr. Flynn our student teacher. We hiked up Glensoulan and climbed the southern side of Maulin. It was hard going because there are no real paths on that side but we did it.

Semi-Final Heartbreak

Our school soccer team exited their competition in heart-breaking fashion on Wednesday in Ringsend Park. In wet, windy and chilly conditions they incredibly forced their way back from the dead on two occasions before succumbing to defeat in the dreaded penalty shoot-out. The opposition from Mulhuddart were a physically imposing side and were much stronger and faster than our boys. They took the lead in the first half but Igor leveled matters with a blistering shot into the roof of the net from 30 metres. Ceilim then had a freekick goal harshly ruled out for offside before the interval. After half-time, Ringsend couldn’t get their passing game going and found themselves 3-1 down with barely a minute left to play. Then Dylan rifled in a shot which flew into the top corner of the goal and with the last kick of normal time Ceilim’s free-kick sailed into the net to level the game at 3-3. It was a remarkable comeback and showed the resilience and never-say-die attitude that the team has displayed all season. Mulhuddart’s pacey striker nudged them ahead in extra-time but in true ‘Roy of The Rovers’ fashion, our captain, Ceilim, bent in an amazing freekick into the top corner with the last kick of the game. What an unbelievable ending to an incredible match!

And so it was on to penalties. Both sides ended up taking 7 penalties each before finally Ringsend missed and Mulhuddart scored to progress to the final. The team should be saluted for their bravery, attitude, behaviour, sportsmanship and skill. The pain of losing will make them stronger for further challenges in the future. Over 20 different players played for the team this year. Only 6 of those are leaving the school this June so we should have a strong team here in Ringsend for years to come. Thanks to Ceilim, Cian, Dean, Craig, Scott and Joshua for their efforts this year. We look forward to seeing Igor, Dylan, Stephen, Cian T, Tymek, Rhys and others from 5th class playing again next year. From 4th we will see Jack, Jake, Lance, Aaron, Evan, Adam and others challenge for their place on next year’s team. We were the only team in the competition to field players from 3rd class. Evan and Paul will be back to help the team again next year. Special mention must go to Darragh, who despite his age, played in every game for the team this year. This is an incredible achievement for someone so young. We look forward to seeing him play again next season.
