NCH Music and Science Project 2016

Mr Lane’s class participated in The National Concert Hall’s ‘Quavers to Quadratics’ music project where they learned about the relationship between music and science. The boys found out all about sound waves and frequency and vibrations. Students from UCD and Trinity College worked with the boys on the project. Fiona and John visited us here in Ringsend but the highlight of the project was the day we spent in the NCH. There, we sang songs, played and learned about a variety of instruments, conducted science experiments relating to sound and made our own instruments. It was a most enjoyable day. Many thanks to Ms Sherry for doing such a brilliant job teaching us our song about the galaxy.

Croke Park Heartbreak

FD5C2048.JPG Our Gaelic footballers reachMKM22455.jpged the Croke Park Shield Final after an excellent season. On a miserable, cold and wet afternoon we were very unlucky to lose by to two points to a strong opponent in Holy Trinity Glencairn. We displayed tremendous effort, skill and teamwork throughout and scored many fine goals and points. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t our side and the woodwork and some excellent goalkeeping prevented us from getting the victory we probably deserved on the balance of play. Everyone played brilliantly but special mention must go to Scott for his two goals despite fracturing his arm and Kyle S who was immense throughout. FD5C1999.JPGThe result was disappointing but the game was thrilling and the performance was one that will be remembered for a long time by the large crowd present in Croker on the day. Well done boys. We are very proud of you.

Fís Film Awards Winners

IMG_6519 IMG_6522 IMG_6520 IMG_6517 IMG_6516 IMG_6514 IMG_6513(1)Last year’s 6th class won a major film award last week for their film, ‘Ringsend and The Rising’. Together with local film-maker, Pat Larkin, the boys made a wonderful short film about the connections Ringsend and its locality has to the events and heroes of 1916. We won in the category called, ‘Year of centenaries’. The whole class took acting roles in the movie and it was a very enjoyable experience for all. Josh and Seán Ebbs collected the award on stage. The prize was a beautiful trophy and an i-pad for the school. Next stop is Hollywood!

Sky Sports Day in Santry

The boys from 3rd,4th,5th and 6th classes took part in a day of sport organised by Sky Sports in the Dublin Indoor Football centre in  Santry last Friday. There were volunteers from Sky there to look after the boys plus coaches from various sports including All-Ireland winners Darren O’Sullivan from Kerry and Noel McGrath from Tipperary. The day was a great success and the boys had a fun day trying their hand at athletics, Gaelic football, basketball, kickboxing and team-building games as well as learning about healthy eating.IMG_8273IMG_8279 IMG_8268 IMG_8275 IMG_8281 IMG_8269 IMG_8278 IMG_8276

Soccer Champions!

image image image image imageWe are the City Division 4 champions after an absorbing 2-0 extratime victory over Walkinstown today in Richmond Park, Inchicore, the home of St Patrick’s Athletic.

It was a very close game with both defences doing very well to keep attackers at bay. Evanand John both hit the woodwork and Oisin came close to winning it late on in normal time but we survived a few scares too including an offside goal which was disallowed by the linesman.

Both teams were exhausted but managed to continue to play great football in added time. Goals from Evan and John meant we avoided penalties and so after three successive final defeats, we finally got our hands on the cup.

Well done to all 17 players. Sean, Dylan, Paul, Oisin, Tadhg, Oisin, Adam, Darragh, Filip, Evan, John, Joshua, Joel, Josh, Luke, Lee and Kyle.

There were excellent performances by all of our players. Standout displays came from Sean, Paul, Darragh, Adam, Oisin, Evan and John with Dylan rightly being chosen by the officials as Man of the Match.

Well done boys.

Glensoulan Hike

It was the turn of Mr.Fahy’s and Mr.O’Rourke’s classes to go on a hike this week. The boys walked from Crone Wood to Glensoulan and had a beautiful view of Powerscourt Waterfall, Ireland’s highest waterfall. The senior boys who came along on the hike to help proudly pointed out Djouce which they climbed the week before. The boys returned over the side of Maulin to Crone Wood.

Djouce Hike

Mr Booth took Mr Lane’s and Ms Purcell’s classes on a hike last week. We walked, climbed, ran, fell and huffed our way to rough terrain and steep gradients for 90 minutes before reaching the summit of Djouce at lunchtime where we took a welcome break.

We then descended the other slope of Djouce before making our way back to the bus via a forest track. Everyone had a brilliant if tiring day out. The weather was glorious and the fantastic scenery will live long in the memory for everyone who went.IMG_7211 IMG_7203(1) IMG_7205 IMG_7204 IMG_7206 IMG_7207 IMG_7208

Football Season 2016

Our school soccer team has reached the Division 4 Final this year. We will probably be up against St. Laurence O’Toole’s in the final if, as expected, they win their semi-final. We have already lost twice to them in our group so it will take a huge effort to beat them but we will try our best.

We played 6 group games with home and away fixtures against Harold’s Cross, John Scottus and St. Laurence O’Tooles. We won 4 games and lost twice to Laurence O’Tooles. The first defeat was a heavy one but we ran them close in the second game. Having come second in our group we qualified for the quarter-finals where we beat St Dominic’s, Tallaght away 6-1. We then played an away semi-final against a very physical Ballymun team where we managed to escape with a 4-1 victory. The final awaits us in the coming weeks.

One remarkable statistic is that Evan has scored a minimum of 3 goals in every match so far this season. Let’s hope he can repeat that form in the final.
